I really like your 9th photo because when I first saw it I figured it was a teddy bear of some kind, but after looking at it for a while I couldn't figure out what it was. I think it is a striking image because you feel like you know what it is but in the end you can't quite figure it out.
Hi Natalie, as for the construction of your photos, I think you did a good job. I think your pictures have the subject in the center and seem to be organized, but some are a little blurry. For the communication of your work, to me your pictures express almost a cold factor since most of them are pictures of some type of metal. And as for the conception I really enjoyed all the pictures. It seems that your motivation was to take pictures lower then where you were, most of the pictures are from a downward angle, but that makes the pictures more interesting then at a straight angle. All in all good job and my favorite picture is #16.
Let me start off by saying that you definitely need to edit this down a bit. We'll eventually have the chance to have crits with larger bodies of work at some point, so don't be afraid to start small. Some of these photos seem to be similar/the same subject matter, so it shouldn't be too hard to edit one out and decide which one you like more than the other. Doing that helps make a crit stronger.
Now, I really like some of the photos further down the list, but the issue is that they're not really that Mystery related, so I feel bad voting for them. Some of the pictures are pretty blurry, which I'd say you need to work on (which could be more of a phone camera issue than a you issue, of course), but I feel that this out of focus-nees succeeds the most with photo 8. It took me a while to figure out what I was looking at, what with the subject being out of focus, and i'd say it's the most interesting mystery you have going on in your work.
My favorite photo is number 19. I like how the light is shining in and illuminating everything. The feeling your photos gave me was almost like abandonment. I felt empty and did not really have any specific feeling after viewing your photos. I think you did a good job on conveying mystery and the way you see things.
My favorite shot of yours is #16. I like how you played around with framing the different objects' heights, spacing, and size. I also enjoyed the angle that you shot it at- it definitely created a sense of mystery. I also really liked the composition of the shot and how it allows the viewer to focus on the unique texture of each object.
#8 is my favorite. By far. I love the V shape that is created, and has a lot of symbology and mystery created from it. It reminds me of in the DaVinci Code when they pick apart the last supper, and the symbol of the male and female being displayed. This being the female. Your whole series is nicely framed and used good contrast. I defknetly get mystery from this.
I like your use of fading focus to convey the mystery of some of the objects, and I particularly like the silhouettes. That being said I think you could have excluded some of these. I don't really get why 13 is in there. My favorite is 9 it looks like an underwater shot.
#2 is definitely my favorite. I don't know what it is. It looks like a giant speaker to me, but that's the point of this whole assignment right? Your self-portraits are really interesting too. I like how you barely even showed your face. I like that they were all silhouettes and captured from the back. It looks really cool with the window in the background as well. The picture of your cat is really cool too. At first, I didn't know what it was. I thought it was a dog toy! It's a little blurry, but it works!
You did a really good job capturing mystery. I find myself questioning the majority of your pictures trying to determine what some of them could possibly be. For some reason the pictures of you in the hat remind me of Lana Del Rey and something you'd see on an album cover of hers. A few of your pictures also have this old-time feel to them in my opinion. My favorite would have to be 17.
My favorite photo by far is #11 i love how the light shine a huge contrast from the mostly darkness of the photo but yet it is not glaringly bright and subtracting from anything it has a very nice even glow almost like it was pulled out of a fire
My favorite photo is number 16. I like the contrast between the objects and the white background. It also has very nice depth of field. Most of your photos are very abstract which fits the mystery theme well. A majority of your photos also use shadows well.
My favorite is number 9 because it gives me a feeling. I'm not sure what the photo is of, and I guess that's the point, but it feels very mysterious and vintage. The composition seems effortless.
You do a great job creating mystery with all of your photos. Most of them, I'm still not sure what I'm looking at. But for me #10 is the best. It's framed perfectly and the contrasting blacks and whites play off each other wonderfully.
